Come join us - we need your energy to help decarbonise Aotearoa and safeguard the planet for future generations to enjoy.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

We have exciting opportunities for students to join our Hydro Generation Team based at Clyde this summer! Our Clyde Dam situated on Lake Dunstan, is the largest concrete gravity dam in New Zealand. This hydroelectric power plant takes the potential energy in water and converts it into electricity through the use of dams and turbines - how cool is that?

What might you be doing? Well, you’ll spend the summer learning about how we operate and manage our Hydro plant and assets in a way that ensures sustainable hydro generation for Aotearoa, New Zealand. You’ll work closely with one of our operational teams (Engineering, Dam Safety, Sustainability, Operations and Maintenance) and get involved with a range of work experiences which will boost your understanding of the hydro generation industry. You’ll get a first hand look at how our Hydro Dams operate including reading of dam and landslide monitoring instruments, support maintenance and engineering works by contractors, data processing, reviews and reporting.

Ko wai koe | About you

We are seeking applications from students ideally in their second year (and above) of studying the following degrees;

  • Engineering - Mechanical, Electrical, or Civil/Natural Resources
  • Environmental or Sustainability

We can equip you with the skills needed to thrive in this internship and beyond. What truly matters to us is inclusivity and diversity of thought, so it is important to just be yourself! If you resonate with our values - curiosity, human kindness, progressive and pointed – then we might be the perfect fit for you. Ideally you are:

  • Interested in the renewable energy sector.
  • Passionate about the environment and our strategy to decarbonise Aotearoa.
  • Naturally curious and enjoy solving problems.
  • A strong communicator with excellent written, verbal and listening skills.
  • A team player who enjoys building relationships and working collaboratively.

What to Expect | Ngā haepapa

Our summer internship program starts with a virtual induction where you’ll learn about our Contact story. You’ll connect with other interns and graduates, and meet some of our leaders who will share some insights on the program and what to expect. Throughout the internship, you’ll have assigned tasks, responsibilities and projects to complete. You’ll also be enrolled in an online learning pathway with eLearning modules to complete over the summer, and you’ll have a dedicated buddy to help support you along the way.

Te Tākinatanga | Our Story

At Contact, we believe home is the most important place in the world. Both the four walls we live in, and our shared home of Aotearoa New Zealand. We’re a power, broadband and mobile company, but we’re so much more than that. Our strategy is our promise to build a better place we call home by being a leader in the decarbonisation of the country. We’re transitioning to a lower emissions future to make a real difference to the world we live in for us now and for generations to come. We’ve committed to net zero energy generation by 2035.

Closing blurb

So, what do you think? This is an opportunity to make a real impact. You’ll be part of an organisation committed to keeping our home great now and for future generations. If you’re passionate about sustainability and ready for an exciting new challenge, we’d love to hear from you.

As much as I love the process engineering-specific tasks in my current rotation, I also love the collaboration aspect of the job. It fascinates me how all these different teams work together and give their best to achieve common goals.
