Te Whiwhinga mahi | Job Description

E te iwi, Contact’s annual summer internships for Māori are now open for applications!

To be eligible for our internships you must whakapapa to Ngāti Tahu, or to Tauhara or Wairākei hapū of Ngāti Tūwharetoa.

All interns will be based in either Taupō or Wellington.

What might you be doing? Well, you’ll spend the summer learning about our organisation as an electricity generator and retailer. You’ll work closely with our Sustainability team, engaging in various work experiences designed to develop the capacity of whānau, hapū, iwi, and Māori communities. You’ll have the opportunity to get hands on experience – from working at a geothermal power station in Taupō through to experiencing corporate life in Wellington. Additionally, you'll support Contact in our efforts to build stronger relationships with Tangata Whenua, especially in the regions where we operate.

Ko wai koe | About you

We’re seeking dynamic and confident Māori individuals interested in gaining experience in a corporate environment. We encourage applications from people of all backgrounds, whether you’re currently studying or not. You may have a passion for or experience in various fields, including engineering, resource/environmental management, sustainability, science, Māori/community development, technology, finance, law and more.

We can provide you with the skills necessary to thrive in this internship and beyond. What truly matters to us is inclusivity and diversity of thought, so it is important to just be yourself! If you align with our values - curiosity, human kindness, progressive and pointed focus – then we might be the perfect fit for you. Ideally you are:

  • Interested in the renewable energy sector.
  • Committed to Kaupapa and have a strong work ethic.
  • Eager to contribute to your whānau, kāinga, marae, hapū, or iwi.
  • A strong communicator with excellent written, verbal and listening skills, and comfortable speaking to a wide range of audiences.
  • Knowledgeable in Te Reo Māori me ōna tikanga.
  • Computer savvy, familiar with Microsoft Office, and have solid research skills.
  • Confident in your whakaaro and views and are not afraid to share them.
  • Passionate about the environment and our strategy to decarbonise Aotearoa.
  • Naturally curious and enjoy solving problems.
  • A team player who enjoys building relationships and working collaboratively.

Ngā haepapa | What to Expect:

Our summer internship program starts with a virtual induction where you’ll learn about our Contact story. You’ll connect with other interns and graduates, and meet some of our leaders who will share some insights on the program and what to expect. Throughout the internship, you’ll have assigned tasks, responsibilities and projects to complete. You’ll also be enrolled in an online learning pathway with eLearning modules to complete over the summer, and you’ll have a dedicated buddy to help support you along the way.

Te Tākinatanga | Our Story

Te Tākinatanga | Our Story

Ko tā Contact whakapono, ko te kāinga te wāhi motuhake o te āo.

Ko te pae tawhiti kia ora a Aotearoa. He pākihi hiko, ipurangi mātou. Otirā, arā kē noa atu ōna peka.

Kei te anga whakamua ngā mahi o te rapu ara e whai hiko ai a Aotearoa.

Kei te whanake hoki me ngā rautaki tiaki i te hiko, te taiāo me te tangata.

He rōpu neke atu i te kotahi mano ō mātou, nō ngā hau e whā e ngākaunui ana ki a

mātou mahi. He roopu whai whakaaro tētahi ki tētahi, e ako ngātahi hoki ana. Ko ngā tikanga hei tūāpapa mo tēnei kawenga.

At Contact, we believe home is the most important place in the world. It's all part of our vision to leave Aotearoa better than we found it. We’re a power, broadband and mobile company, but we’re so much more than that. We are transforming the ways we mahi, and how Aotearoa is powered, leading the charge on renewable energy and digitising customer journeys in ways not yet seen here. A team of 1000+ from all walks of life who love what we do, look out for each other, and learn from one another every day, we’re stoked to be guided by our tikanga: we touch lives to make life better.

So, what do you think? This is an opportunity to make a real impact. You’ll be part of an organisation committed to keeping our home great now and for future generations. If you’re passionate about sustainability and ready for an exciting new challenge, we’d love to hear from you.

As part of your application, we ask that you include confirmation of your whakapapa OR a letter of endorsement from your hapū/iwi representative, or kaumātua for any of the following:

  • Ngāti Tahu internship open to uri o Ngāti Tahu.
  • Tauhara internship open to those of Tūwharetoa descent who whakapapa to Tauhara hapū.
  • Wairākei internship open to those of Tūwharetoa descent who whakapapa to Wairākei hapū.
