Clyde Hydro Dam - Unit 4 Transformer

A transformer at Clyde is a critical piece of equipment taking the electrical energy output of each generator and transforms it from 15,000 volts to 220,000 volts to be transported on the national grid as efficiently as possible and then delivered to customers all over New Zealand.

A transformer at Clyde is a critical piece of equipment taking the electrical energy output of each generator and transforms it from 15,000 volts to 220,000 volts to be transported on the national grid as efficiently as possible and then delivered to customers all over New Zealand. Clyde Hydro Dam has four operating transformers plus a spare which was all constructed in NZ at the same time as the dam in the 1980s. This is the replacement for the original Unit 4, manufactured by Hyosung Industries in South Korea and transported via boat and Truck to New Zealand. Contact Energy has five transformers incoming, and as a way to support our Rainbow Community, each transformer will be a colour of the rainbow flag.
