During my engineering study, I realised that the infrastructure is like air as it is everywhere, but we are never aware of its importance. I wished to work for it and now I am here!

What's your job about?

HCC promotes the social, economic, environmental, and cultural well-being of Hamiltonians in the present and in the future.
I am in City Infrastructure.

I am rotating a few different departments during my graduate programme. My first rotation place is the Three Waters Connections team. I have been working here for only a month and a week.

My daily work is application receipt, sending acknowledge to applicants, answering the email from applicants, application status updates on the system, and support quoting.

I see a lot of plans for construction and a GIS map to figure out what connections need to be installed for the project. It can be only one dwelling or a big subdivision. It is very surprising to see all the hidden parts of the buildings and city infrastructure!

What's your background?

South Korea. I have moved to New Zealand in February 2015.

I have had experience working in a logistics company. In this role, I analysed national wide logistics data and came up with solutions to improve regional quality performance. I enjoyed this role very much and it gave me a good understanding of business and society.

The most important stage was when I decided to study Civil Engineering and studied for my diploma for two years.

I applied it through the HCC career website. I have been here for a month and a couple of weeks.

During my engineering study, I realised that the infrastructure is like air as it is everywhere, but we are never aware of its importance. I wished to work for it and now I am here!

What do you think are the most important characteristics to be successful at HCC and in your role?

Consideration to be successful at HCC and logical thinking for my role.

Building a good relationship with other people who work for different areas in council also learning other areas.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I love to see and analyse all the plans to lodge the Three Waters Connections applications on the system. Along with my study, I saw some plans and drew my own plans for the project, but they are all in the past or not in real life. However, the plans I am looking at are alive and real!

I love to go to the site with Infrastructure Connections Coordinate, Cliff Whittaker, who has got 49 years of experience in the field! Listening to his knowledge is awesome! He knows everywhere and everything about the infrastructure!

What are the limitations of your job?

Three Waters Connections team is currently working through a three-month backlog of connections applications. Timeframes for processing applications and installing connections will vary depending on their complexity. Customer expectations for timely quotes are high and can be demanding, honestly, we are not able to provide timeframes to applicants. I assume that working at HCC will be very busy as Hamilton city is growing rapidly.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Excel (important no matter where you are)
  • Apply for jobs, as many as possible. Don’t limit yourself and look for any opportunities no matter how big or small.
  • Be honest (in the interview)
