Jane Wang

Jane Wang graduated from the University of NSW in 2024 with a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Finance, and a Bachelor of Information Systems. Here is an example of a day in her life as a graduate at Raytheon Australia’s Centre for Joint Integration in Adelaide.

6.45 AM

I wake up to my alarm going off and realise that today is not the day I’m driving into office, which means I should’ve woken up earlier. I panic and get ready as quickly as possible to catch my bus and make my metro connection.

7.50 AM

The walk from the Macquarie Park train station to the office takes around 10 minutes (google maps will display a longer route, but we’ll let you in on the secret once you commence work).

8.00 AM

I make my way up to level 3 and head straight to my locker to collect my keyboard, mouse, and drink bottle. I find my team and the only desk remaining that isn’t facing the walkway is the one my boss likes to sit in… I steal his spot because first come, first serve! After settling into my seat and logging on, the first thing I do is check my teams messages and review new emails. Usually, the emails I receive overnight are notifications of our test environments being updated. I also check my calendar and prepare myself for the day ahead.

8.30 AM

Coffee and breakfast run – coffee is a morning essential for me and luckily, there is a café directly below the office, which is convenient! With my coffee and yoghurt ticked off, I happily start getting to work. This morning, I have two systems access requests to action.

9.45 AM

My first meeting of the day is a stand up with my team – we do this daily so we can update colleagues on progress of our tasks and seek help if needed. I report on what I achieved yesterday and my plan of attack for today.

10.00 AM

I have my second meeting of the day – this is a monthly sprint planning with my team to analyse what went well and what we can improve on from the last sprint. We discuss our priorities for the current sprint and confirm the timeline of our milestones for the year.

12.15 PM

Lunch time! It’s a good opportunity to catch up with other graduates and interns. Usually a few of my colleagues and I would drive one car to Macquarie Centre and buy our lunch from the food court. However today we went to a burger truck located nearby and brought our burgers back to the office to eat.

1.30 PM

It’s time to lock-in. Recently I’ve partnered with a colleague to migrate a large amount of Human Resources (HR) data from one part of the IT system to another. This will enable HR to seamlessly update data and reduce the number of manual tasks. Ongoing communication with HR is very important to ensure the team is aware of the migration journey progress. I put in my air pods and select one of my albums on Spotify (usually my Chinese playlist) and begin focusing.

3.00 PM

It’s time for a quick stretch and kitchen run with my team. We like taking breaks together throughout the day and stocking ourselves up with fresh cold water or cups of tea. We usually chitchat and crack a few jokes before locking back in.

4.30 PM

Home time! On days we head into the office, my team and I leave before 5pm to beat the traffic.

6.00 PM

Although all I want to do is eat, shower and lie in bed, I can’t skip gym day. I head to the gym and hit my cardio minutes for the day. This is also when I get the chance to watch my Netflix shows and take my mind off work. Right after the gym, I enjoy dinner nearby, before heading home.

9.30 PM

At this point I’ve showered and brushed my teeth (to stop myself from eating snacks). I hop into bed and scroll through my phone, staying connected with friends and keeping up to date with the news.

12.30 AM

I finally decide it’s time to sleep and remember to turn on my alarm to wake up – I know I will regret staying up late when it goes off, but that’s tomorrow’s problem.
