Enjoy every little moment of success on each and every project. Whether it’s in a team setting or a personal achievement on a project, taking the time to appreciate what you have achieved makes it 100% more rewarding.

What's your job about?

Struxture is an independently owned construction company with projects across Australia and New Zealand.  As a graduate, my role is to gain experience and assist my colleagues in construction services.

My role in the graduate programme has been very diverse having had the opportunity to complete on-site project coordination and office-based project administration. I was involved in on-site coordination of trades, and meetings with clients to discuss project status, design and general site OH&S.

What's your background?

I grew up in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, completing VCE at Luther College in Croydon Hills, I then went on to study for a Diploma in Building and Construction and a Bachelor of Applied Science (Project Management) at RMIT University (Melbourne City Campus).

During my time at University, I took the opportunity to travel and use the majority of the breaks to really discover and challenge what I wanted out of my career.

I got this position by applying online through my University Portal at RMIT when looking for graduate positions in my final year of university. I was attracted to the job due to the interesting and challenging projects that Struxture are involved in.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, I have had the opportunity to meet some incredible people who haven’t necessarily come from the same background. As long as you are willing to learn, organised and confident with what you do, you could also have a career in my role. Struxture will challenge your abilities and make you strive to be the best professional you can be whilst also providing support with every step of the way.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

I love the critical and important nature of the projects Struxture works on. My involvement in health and correctional projects has given me an appreciation for the high level of detail required in construction, the sensitivity of the environments we work in and the challenges that come from these. Achieving practical completion on a project is a surreal feeling knowing that the dedication you have put into a project has delivered a final product.

What are the limitations of your job?

The biggest limitation I have had would be some of the travel required for regional projects I have been involved with and living away from home whilst the project was in the construction phase.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

  • Ask as many questions as physically possible, the better the understanding and depth of knowledge you have the better off you will be as a young professional.
  • Enjoy every little moment of success on each and every project. Whether it’s in a team setting or a personal achievement on a project, taking the time to appreciate what you have achieved makes it 100% more rewarding.
  • Don’t stress! No one is expecting you to be a Construction Manager from day one.
